Production Stage Manager

SUMMARY:

This is a full time, year round, non-exempt position. 

The PSM ensures the smooth and efficient functioning of Seattle Opera’s rehearsals, performances, and the Stage Management team.  All terms and work conditions for stage managements position are set by Seattle Opera’s collective bargaining agreement with American Guild of Musical Artists (AGMA).  The successful candidate will be offered a one-year renewable contract.

 

PRINCIPAL ACCOUNTABILITIES: 

  • Run and call main stage, chamber opera, artist recitals, and season gala productions.
  • Coordinate and supervise the main stage rehearsals and call the performances as contracted and in accordance with the process and policies determined by the Director of Production.
  • ​​Determine, hire, and supervise the main stage, chamber opera, artist recital and select Marketing and Development events stage management staff.
  • Responsibly direct the workflow for yourself and the stage management staff. 
  • Maintain the Stage Manager’s score and company production records as needed. 
  • Review and manage budgets for Stage Management staff and rehearsal/performance operations.  
  • Maintain consistent, open communication and interaction with all parties involved in the productions.  
  • Determine, procure, and maintain supplies needed for the smooth operation of the Stage Management group.
  • Read, understand, and tape out rehearsal ground plans in the rehearsal room prior to the 1st day of rehearsals. 
  • Coordinate and communicate rehearsal needs with various departments prior to 1st day for rehearsal.   

Maintain the Opera Show Document, Scene Breakdown, Show Timings, and other relevant pre-planning documents in the year leading up to the production.  

Coordinate, build, and maintain Opera Master Calendar, Opera Show Calendars, and Recital Calendars utilizing the PROPARED scheduling software.  

 

Serve as main contact for Stage Directors in advance of show.

 

Frequent check ins with the music staff and artistic department

Attend meetings as required. 

Archive Opera materials according to Seattle Opera standard practice.

Maintain the Seattle Opera artist website.  

In collaboration with the Assistant Director of Production develop and supervise the stage management intern program.

Other Stage Management duties as assigned. A complete job analysis will be provided during the interview process.

RESPONSIBILTY AND AUTHORITY:

                                           Stage Management Staff Communication: 

  • Ensure flow of information about company activities.
  • Help mediate departmental issues.
  • Monitor, evaluate, and execute corrective action when necessary.
  • Encourage and provide opportunities for transparent communication.
  • Motivate and inspire stage management staff to do their best work on all assignments.
  • Maintain department safety program.
  • Interface and communicate clearly with the labor union reps and job stewards.
  • Teach and demonstrate stage management skills to the Production Assistant, P&P tour stage manager, and stage management interns.

 

                                                              Stage Management Materials & Equipment:

  • Determine needs, obtain best possible price and materials, arrange for purchase and delivery in a timely fashion.

                                                         Internal Relationships:

  • Maintain positive working relationship with all SO Employees.
  • Collaborate with Creative Team Members and SO Production and

Artistic Staff

External Relationships:

  • Communicate with other opera companies as needed regarding Rental and Co-Production materials and information as it applies to the successful running of rehearsal and performances.

 QUALIFICATIONS:  

Required Qualifications

  • The candidate must be an AGMA member in good standing, make an application to join AGMA, or become a non-member fee payor. 

Required Skills                                 

  • Organization, initiative, innovation, efficiency, accuracy.  Ability to organize and prioritize a wide variety of projects and meet all established deadlines. 
  • Ability to read and follow sheet music. 
  • Ability to read and understand scenic ground plans, centerline sections, and line set schedules.
  • Ability to perform well under pressure.  
  • Flexibility to function with constantly changing priorities and schedules. 
  • Excellent communication skills.  
  • Good research skills.  
  • Must maintain high personal standards including punctuality and reliability. 
  • Knowledge of MS Word and Excel preferred (PROPARED Calendar Software is a plus).  

 Required Experience and Knowledge

  • Demonstrated experience managing rehearsals and performances.
  • Demonstrated experience calling performances. (Knowledge of the Opera canon a plus.)
  • Working knowledge and implementation of safety standards.

 SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS  

Transportation

The candidate must have reliable transportation.

START DATE                                   

March 2024

 COMPENSATION

Compensation is paid weekly in accordance with the AGMA collective bargaining rates plus 15% overscale.  

FY23 Stage Management base rate + 15% is $2,049 per week.  

The weekly rate will be adjusted to reflect future AGMA rates as needed.
